Global Convening for the Restitution of African Cultural Heritage
Event Recap
In August 2024, Open Society Foundations hosted the Global Convening for the Restitution of African Cultural Heritage in Accra, Ghana—a three-day summit advancing the movement for the return of African heritage taken during the colonial period. Bringing together representatives from the African Union, ECOWAS, NGOs, UN agencies, academia, artists, civil society, and the diaspora, the convening fostered critical dialogue, advocacy, and collaboration toward sustainable restitution efforts.
Our team captured the key plenaries, thematic sessions, performances, and powerful exchanges that shaped this landmark gathering.
